To put your site on the web, you will need a Domain Name (i.e www.mysite.ie) and someone to host your site. Although I do not offer hosting services myself, I can arrange this through a third-party hosting provider. I use www.hostingireland.ie
The first thing to do is check the name you want is not registered already! The easiest way to do this is to simply put it into your web browser. If you get a 'page not found' error, you should be ok. (although some names may be registered without websites uploaded to them). I can check with registration companies to see if your desired domain name is available. The cost of registering a domain name can vary. Note that .ie domains are more expensive, require company documentation (or personal identification if not a company site) to be submitted, and are only available to companies and individuals resident on the island of Ireland.
There are many hosting packages available. These depend on the amount of space you rent on the server, and what extra options you require. Small business sites generally only require a basic hosting package. These will include a small number of email addresses (i.e fred@mysite.ie, pat@mysite.ie), support for scripting (needed for 'contact us' forms, guestbooks etc) and monitoring tools.
There are 3 types of internet search engine. A 'directory' service (i.e. yahoo.com) only lists the sites that have directly registered with it. A search engine (i.e. altavista.com) uses programs to search links on the web, and provides a user with this information prioritised by various criteria. A hybrid of both (i.e. google.com) uses both techniques to provide search information. Your site will be optimised with 'keywords' so as search engine 'robot programs' can locate it and provide relevant details. I can also register your site with several 'free' search engines. It is your responsibility if you wish to register your site with any paid directory services, such as yahoo, however I can advise with this.
